Terms & Conditions – Marriage Celebrant

These Terms & Conditions apply to all celebrant services provided by Laura B Marriage Celebrant (“the Celebrant”) to the engaged couple (“the Couple”). By booking the Celebrant, the Couple agrees to the following:

1. Bookings & Fees

1.1 A non-refundable booking fee of NZD $200 is required to secure the wedding date and time.
1.2 Bookings are confirmed only once the booking fee has been received.
1.3 The balance of the fee is due no later than 30 days prior to the ceremony.

2. Cancellations & Postponements

2.1 If the Couple cancels the booking:

  • The booking fee remains non-refundable.

  • If cancellation occurs within 30 days of the wedding date, 50% of the total fee is payable.

2.2 If the Couple postpones:

  • The booking fee may be transferred to the new date, subject to the Celebrant’s availability.

  • If the Celebrant is unavailable on the new date, normal cancellation terms apply.

2.3 If the Celebrant cancels due to illness, emergency, or unforeseen circumstances:

  • All fees paid (including the booking fee) will be refunded in full, or

  • The Celebrant will use reasonable efforts to assist the Couple in finding a replacement registered celebrant.

3. Legal Requirements

3.1 The Couple is responsible for applying for and obtaining a valid marriage licence from Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM). These are only valid for 90 days. You can apply here - https://www.govt.nz/browse/family-and-whanau/getting-married/get-a-marriage-licence/
3.2 The Couple must provide the licence to the Celebrant no later than the day of the ceremony.
3.3 The Celebrant cannot legally perform the marriage without the licence.
3.4 The Couple must provide two legal witnesses. Your witnesses can be a friend, relative or someone else entirely! Your witnesses cannot be intoxicated and must be able to understand what’s happening.

If your witnesses are children, they have to be old enough to understand the ceremony, and be able to explain their understanding in court later if required (my suggestion is that you use witnesses over the age of 12). If you witness speaks a different language to you and your celebrant, you’ll need an interpreter. The interpreter has to sign a declaration before the ceremony to say they’ll interpret what you say accurately.

3.5 After the marriage ceremony I will send the paperwork to the Register of Births, Deaths and Marriages - then they post your marriage certificate to you.

4. Travel & Additional Costs

4.1 Travel within 30 km of Cambridge (base location) is included in the standard fee.
4.2 Travel beyond this may incur a mileage charge of $1 per km and, where applicable, accommodation, ferry, or flight costs will also be covered by the couple.
4.3 Additional services such as rehearsals, extra meetings, or script changes may attract additional charges (discussed in advance).

5. Ceremony Delivery

5.1 The Celebrant will work with the Couple to prepare a personalised ceremony script.
5.2 Final ceremony details must be agreed upon no later than 7 days before the ceremony.
5.3 The Couple is responsible for ensuring the ceremony starts on time. Delays exceeding 30 minutes may impact delivery or affect the Celebrant’s ability to officiate if there are other commitments.

6. Professional Standards & Conduct

6.1 The Celebrant will conduct the ceremony with professionalism, care, and in accordance with New Zealand law.
6.2 The Celebrant reserves the right to withdraw services if:

  • The Couple or guests behave in an aggressive, abusive, or unlawful manner, or

  • The Celebrant’s health, safety, or wellbeing is at risk.

7. Media & Promotion

7.1 The Couple consents to photographers and videographers recording the ceremony, provided they do not interfere with the legal proceedings.
7.2 The Celebrant may request permission to use photos or video of themselves performing the ceremony for promotional purposes, but will not do so without the Couple’s written consent.

8. Limitation of Liability

8.1 The Celebrant is not responsible for:

  • Delays or disruptions caused by the Couple, guests, weather, or third parties.

  • Failure to marry the Couple if legal requirements (e.g., marriage licence, witnesses) are not met.

8.2 In all circumstances, the Celebrant’s liability is limited to the total amount of fees paid.
